The New Lipchis Way was first conceived in the 1980’s by a group of ramblers who devised a route from their home town of Liphook to Chichester Cathedral – hence the unusual name.
It was brought back to life in 2008 when Keith & Sally from ‘Footprints of Sussex’ received a grant from West Sussex County Council to publish a trail guide and way mark the route. They took the opportunity to extend the route southwards to the entrance to Chichester Harbour and to re-route it along a pretty section of the Rother Valley
It now makes a delightful three-day walk and, being aligned north-south, crosses all the main geologies of West Sussex thereby offering a great variety of scenery, flora and fauna. Starting from the greensand ridges, it passes through Wealden river valleys and heathlands, and climbs over the high chalk downland to the coastal plain beyond.
The trail logo reflects this by depicting the South Downs, the River Rother and Chichester Harbour.
Our compact trail guide divides it into six sections, which although unequal in distance, break the route into stages that allow the use of public transport. You will also need the two Ordnance Survey Explorer maps OL8 & OL33 - the trail is clearly shown on both.
There is a good choice of accommodation and restaurants in Liphook, Midhurst and Chichester, elsewhere there is a smattering of pubs and B&B’s – although the northern section is a little sparse in that respect.
